Ira Gilbert Smith papers, 1830-1920.

A number of the papers concern his administration of the estates of Jedediah Strong Smith, 1833-1838, and Austin Smith, 1834-1835; included are receipts by members of the Smith family; documents signed by David E. Jackson, 1832; B.F. Edwards, 1834; Farrar & (M.) Martin, Henry Chouteau, Charles Collins, and A.H. Evans, 1835; Wood & Shaw, 1847-1848; and promissory notes relating to Dan Wilder, 1830; Jinks Smith, 1838, and Gustavus Hills, 1839. Other items include two letters by Ira G. and Eliza (Hubbard) Smith to her parents, 1835; and various papers of their daughter, Frances Cornelia (Smith) Hubbard, 1853-1920; among the latter is her account of a voyage from California to the States via the Isthmus, 1853; reminiscences of a journey to New Mexico in later life; and three letters from E.D. Smith, 1913-1914.

Jedediah Strong Smith was born June 24, 1799 in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York. He was the son of Jedediah Smith of New Hampshire and was the eldest of fourteen children. Jedediah's early childhood was spent in Ohio where he received and English and Latin education. At thirteen he became a clerk on a Lake Erie freighter where he learned business methods and met traders returning from the Far West. Jedediah became ambitious for an adventure to the wilderness and he went to St. Louis around...
